Do you love the trees in Sandy? You have Mike Marett to thank for that!
As the Urban Forester, Mike Marett has helped countless residents over the years and protected many of the great trees in the public spaces in Sandy. He promoted Sandy as a Tree City USA City for the past 14 consecutive years! He is well known outside of Sandy, as other cities often call him for advice and assistance.
Mike began working for Sandy City on Feburary 10, 1992, originally hired on the Grounds Crew and worked his way up to work as the Urban Forester, starting in forestry after a tree failure in Bicentennial Park.
While working for Sandy, Mike wrote and implemented the City tree ordinance and served on the Sandy Beautification Committee. He has several honors from the Utah Community Forest Council, including President, Arborist of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement Award. Mike also has two International Society of Arboriculture certifications: Certified Arborist and Municipal Arborist.
Outside of Sandy, Mike was the Chairperson of the ISA-Utah Regional Tree Climbing Championship and the Utah Green Conference tree track. He loves to golf and says he is “ok at it” for his age. He and his wife Anna have 2 boys and have lived in Riverton for over 25 years. Sadly, Mike retired at the end of March and he is greatly missed!
