Miss Sandy 2016: Katie Ann Powell
Katie Ann Powell, Miss Sandy 2016, has a passion for media literacy. Katie Ann has become the ‘Media Detective’ as she teaches kids in elementary schools to be media sleuths by analyzing and evaluating the material they see online through the White Ribbon Week program. If you can’t find Miss Sandy training young sleuths in the city’s elementary schools, you can find her playing her harp at city events. Katie Ann has played the harp for over 13 years and is determined to play until the day she dies. Her favorite song to play is Baroque Flamenco by Deborah Henson-Conant, which was the piece she competed with in the Miss Sandy pageant.
In addition to playing the harp, Katie Ann also enjoys singing, dancing, and acting. Katie Ann’s favorite thing about Sandy City is the sense of community anchored in the arts. One of her favorite things to do on a hot summer day is to attend the local concerts at the outdoor Sandy Amphitheater. Whether she is in the elementary schools, attending local events, or enjoying an evening at the amphitheater, Katie Ann is grateful for her incredible city. In her words, “I love my spectacular Sandy!”
