Karen Thomas

Community Coordinator (Alta High Area/Community 13)

Post Date:07/05/2016 11:27 AM
Karen moved to Sandy in January 1994 with her husband and 3 sons. She volunteered in local schools tutoring students in reading, training reading tutors, and judging and running PTA Reflections contests. Her talent for editing landed her a job at Cityworks, a Sandy company specializing in infrastructure management software, where she worked for 8 years. From editing articles for clients hit by Hurricane Katrina, she learned the importance of disaster preparation from a city's perspective.

Since 2009, she has served as a community coordinator for the Alta High Community of 862 homes. She loves living in Sandy because of the City's forward thinking, responsiveness to its citizens, and many programs like Citizen Corps, balloon festival, and Healthy Sandy. Her hobbies include 4 grandsons, traveling, hiking, snorkeling, and learning.

Currently she is involved with the Disaster Discovery Center project and teaches a free public workshop on the third Thursday of every month at the fire station on 9010 South 150 East at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend Rebound in 72TM to learn about appropriate disaster responses, condition assessments, disaster supply kits, and other lifesaving information compiled from over 400 hours of research. Take a preparedness survey, register for the workshop, or get more information at www.disasterdiscoverycenter.org.
