Emily Guertler

People's Choice Winner 2016 YEA Nationals

Post Date:09/15/2016 9:59 AM

Seeing the daily struggles of her brother dealing with diabetes served as the inspiration for 15-year-old Emily Guertler to start her small business, StraightShot Apparel. Wanting to find a way to make required daily injections more manageable for kids and parents led her to design a line of stylish pants with adjustable zippers. The pants are hand-sewn and made exclusively for children, with a zipper along the thigh making it easier to give an injection in the upper leg.

A practical solution to help her 7-year-old brother, Lincoln and her mom turned into an award-winning idea when Emily signed up to take part in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!). Emily learned more about starting and managing her own company and was ultimately named People’s Choice Winner at the national 2016 YEA! Saunders Scholar competition at this year’s America’s Small Business Summit and earned $2,000 for her efforts. She has plans to continue designing additional clothing items and hopes to find a manufacturer and investors interested in expanding StraightShot Apparel. Clearly, this girl will continue to make her mark on the world!
