Our community experienced an unthinkable tragedy on Tuesday, June 6 when two of our residents, Memorez Rackley and her 6-year-old son, Jace were the victims of a shooting. Linda and I wanted to express our condolences to their family, neighbors and friends.

As we live,work and play in Sandy City, there are approximately 150 individuals dedicated to ensuring we do so safely: 112 sworn officers, 35 civilians and 65 crossing guards. Strong volunteer programs, such as the Sandy Police Explorer Post for youth 14-21 years old and our VIPs program (Volunteers in Police Service), complement those efforts.

The phrase, “the government closest to the people governs best” comes to my mind every legislative session. In Sandy City, we use this phrase as a guiding principle, but also as a cautionary tale.

The Boy Scout motto is Be Prepared, meaning one is ready, willing and able to do whatever is necessary in any situation that comes along. As a city, we have always subscribed to this wisdom, preparing ourselves for potential crises by training our employees, practicing fiscal responsibility, creating emergency management plans and coordinating with agencies for potential relief aid.

On December 9, the crown jewel of our Cairns City Center, Hale Centre Theatre, marked an important construction milestone with the conclusion of major concrete and steel work for its 130,000 square feet, two-theater complex.

Political elections can often be contentious, but the 2016 presidential election has been particularly negative, disheartening and often, sickening. It’s no wonder we all are tired of hearing about politics, lament the state of our country and worry our elected officials have lost sight of who they serve.

Hale Centre Theatre (HCT) is rapidly rising out of the ground and is now only a year away from entertaining families from around the state with high quality performances, in what is being called the most magical, technologically-advanced theater-in-the-round in the world. And we couldn’t be more pleased to welcome them to Sandy City as the crown jewel of our Cairns City Center development.

Highly publicized incidents and inflammatory rhetoric have cast an unfair pall over the entire policing community. As with any industry, there are going to be a few bad apples, but by and large, police officers deserve our respect and trust.

Sandy was pleased to welcome Jam On It as host of the Big Mountain Jam, the largest basketball tournament in Utah history. Held at the South Towne Expo Center from June 30 through July 2, it shattered records with impressive numbers, proving Sandy is becoming a top sports destination for youth athletics.

On June 30, Sandy City and Parents Empowered held a press conference to announce the third phase of our campaign to prevent underage drinking.
The new year brings the opportunity to make resolutions to improve our lives, with many of us trying to achieve fitness and weight loss goals. I can think of no better time to highlight one of our longest running and most successful programs, Healthy Sandy.
