A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF SANDY CITY UTAH RECOGNIZING A RECIPIENT OF THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS 

WHEREAS,   A Sandy seventh-grade student, Abigail Slama-Catron, Midvale Middle School, was named one of the top two youth volunteers in Utah for 2018, in the 23rd annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and

WHEREAS,   the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is a national youth recognition program sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). This program represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. This program was designed to emphasize the importance our nation places on services to others, and to encourage all young Americans to contribute to their communities; and 

WHEREAS,   this young Sandy resident helped invent a “bionic scarecrow” to keep birds away from airplanes as they take off and land at airports; and

WHEREAS,  Salt Lake City International Airport now has three of these devices at its airport,

and several other airports in the U.S. and abroad have expressed interest in their Bionic Scarecrow; and

WHEREAS,   the young people of Sandy are tomorrow’s leaders; and

WHEREAS,   Prudential Financial Chairman and CEO, John Strangfeld has noted, “Students like Abigail, represent the best of America’s youth, and are role models to their peers and their communities.” 

NOW, THEREFORE, THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL DO HEREBY COMMEND ABIGAIL SLAMA-CATRON FOR HER OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE.

 

 

WHEREAS,   A Sandy high school student, Tabitha Bell, Waterford School, was named one of America’s top ten youth volunteers for 2018 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and

WHEREAS,   the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is a national youth recognition program sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). This program represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. This program was designed to emphasize the importance our nation places on services to others, and to encourage all young Americans to contribute to their communities; and

WHEREAS,   this young Sandy resident raised more than $115,000 through her nonprofit, “Pawsitive Pawsibilities”, to provide nine service dogs to people who otherwise could not afford one; and

WHEREAS,  since its inception, her organization has selected, purchased, and trained nine dogs that have changed the lives of several young people with debilitating illnesses, a veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder, a teenage gunshot victim and a young woman with diabetes; and

WHEREAS,   the young people of Sandy are tomorrow’s leaders; and

WHEREAS,   Prudential Financial Chairman and CEO, John Strangfeld has noted, “Students like Tabitha, represent the best of America’s youth, and are role models to their peers and their communities.”

NOW, THEREFORE, THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL DO HEREBY COMMEND TABITHA BELL FOR HER OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE.

 

WHEREAS,   A Sandy high school student, Keerthana Ramalingam, American Preparatory Academy, was named a distinguished finalist in Utah for 2018, in the 23rd annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and

WHEREAS,   the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is a national youth recognition program sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). This program represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. This program was designed to emphasize the importance our nation places on services to others, and to encourage all young Americans to contribute to their communities; and

WHEREAS,   this young Sandy resident has worked in a number of ways to support students with learning disabilities and developed an app with customizable text functions to improve the web browsing experience for people with dyslexia; and 

WHEREAS,   the young people of Sandy are tomorrow’s leaders; and

WHEREAS,   Prudential Financial Chairman and CEO, John Strangfeld has noted, “Students like Keerthana, represent the best of America’s youth, and are role models to their peers and their communities.” 

NOW, THEREFORE, THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL DO HEREBY COMMEND KEERTHANA RAMALINGAM FOR HER OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE.
