National Preparedness Month

House After Earthquake

September is National Preparedness Month. This is a great time to get started on or recommit to your preparedness journey. Having a plan in place, understood by your family, will help you recover more quickly than flying by the seat of your pants. As a resident of Sandy City, you can help make our community a safer place by incorporating these principles into your family’s plan.

Prevention. Prevent, avoid or stop an imminent, threatened or actual act of terrorism. These random attacks are occurring around the country. While you may not be able to prevent an attack, you can prepare so you and your family know what to do by attending “Run, Hide, Fight” and “Stop the Bleed” training courses.

Protection. Protect your family and property against natural or man-made disasters. We interact with friends, neighbors, and even strangers on a daily basis; so much so that it is easy to become complacent. However, if you see something that doesn’t look right, contact the Sandy Police and say something. Help protect our city by maintaining situational awareness.

Mitigation.  Reducing exposure to hazards or reducing the likelihood of them occurring requires effort, such as assessing your home and identifying the hazards in your area, retrofitting your home, and/or purchasing earthquake insurance.

Response. Immediately following a disaster, knowing the correct response to save lives, protect property and the environment, and how to meet basic human needs can make the recovery process much more comfortable for you and your family.

Recovery. Have a recovery plan that includes a place to go, insurance strategies, and the maintenance of important documents for family and property. Make it a point to get children back to school, so you can get back to work. The more quickly you recover, the more quickly Sandy City will recover.
