Mike has served as Community Development Director for Sandy since 1982. Two of his many contributions include the evolution of the city’s innovative sign ordinance (copied by many other cities) and the city civic center area. In short, Sandy City is a desirable place to live, work and play because of Mike Coulam’s vision for the community spanning over 35 years.
Mike’s greatest strength lies with his ability to build a consensus between diverse groups, balancing economic development needs and citizen participation needs to build a beautiful community. He has spent years educating public officials and citizen groups on the importance of proper urban planning. His efforts have made Sandy City a showplace for planning in the State of Utah.
In addition to leading the community planning efforts for Sandy City over the last 35 years, Mike has also been heavily involved in other volunteer activities. In 1986, he spearheaded the formation of the City’s first “Sandy Pride Day”. Mike has also been active in the Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for long term service in local and regional scouting. Mike is also a former Noal Bateman Award winner in 1992. He retired at the end of March and we are sad to see him go!
