Behind the Badge: Keeping Sandy Safe

As we live,work and play in Sandy City, there are approximately 150 individuals dedicated to ensuring we do so safely: 112 sworn officers, 35 civilians and 65 crossing guards. Strong volunteer programs, such as the Sandy Police Explorer Post for youth 14-21 years old and our VIPs program (Volunteers in Police Service), complement those efforts.

The result? A remarkably safe community, frequently praised as one of the safest large cities in the State.

Although the primary goal is to keep our city safe, it is not enough. Chief Kevin Thacker has created a department focused on strengthening the relationship between the police and our community. Chief Thacker is uniquely qualified to build a community-centric department, having literally dedicated his professional career, 34 years to be exact, to Sandy City. 

How Are We Keeping Sandy Safe?

Problem Solving Philosophy

Our officers are trained to address the underlying cause of issues, not just respond to problems. Safe communities are those that don’t just respond to calls, they resolve issues. Yes, it takes more time and effort, but it’s worth it and it’s the “Sandy Way”.

Valuable programs, such as the Youth Court Program, the Community Response Team and the Family Crimes Intervention Unit all seek to build upon the trust we have with the community and, most importantly, work towards resolving issues not just responding.

Community-Oriented Policing

Full service personalized policing is our goal in Sandy. Officers are tasked with becoming entrenched in the community, proactively resolving issues and building partnerships with residents to better identify and solve problems. In our policing model, the community is empowered to be a large part of the solution, after all, it is their city.

Citizen Feedback

Knowing we can’t improve without critique, a survey program was initiated in August to evaluate each call and make any necessary improvements. 

Four Steps for Safety:

  1. Officers spend more time with citizens to reduce crime and increase safety.
  2. Better police-citizen communication ensures valuable information is shared.
  3. Officers know their communities and their communities know them. That is how trust is earned and kept.
  4. No single agency can solve complex social issues alone. Partnerships are fostered to provide necessary resources.

Sandy City residents can feel confident they have a quality police department that is trained and dedicated to not only protecting them, but to doing their duty with integrity, a service-oriented attitude and excellence.
