Meet Alex Chang, Sandy Youth City Council Member. He just finished his sophomore year at Hillcrest High School and recently won 3rd place at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in LA, competing against 1800 finalists from over 78 countries. Check out his story about this award-winning project:

“I started this research project back in October when I contacted several professors at the University of Utah. I knew I was interested in the fields of image analysis and computer vision with their applications in the medical field since I had done a project dealing with analysis of rat eyes for abnormalities last year. I believe that as technology continues to develop, the medical field will more and more rely on image analysis since it is much more efficient and can help more people. I was lucky enough to land a project which was similar to my previous work, which was analysis of human retinal fundus images for a disease called age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Currently, the automated methods to detect the disease are not accurate enough and manual methods aren’t as efficient. I developed a method that was faster and more accurate through writing my own code.

I entered this project in my district science fair, where I then progressed to the Salt Lake Valley Regional Science and Engineering Fair (SLVSEF). After being one of the top 6 projects at SLVSEF, I progressed on to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), held in LA, with over 78 countries, regions, and territories attending and almost 1800 finalists. There, I won 3rd place in my category, Biomedical Engineering. Attending ISEF was an extremely rewarding experience and it allowed me to meet smart and talented people from all over the world with similar interests to mine.”

Congrats to Alex on this great award! We are thrilled to have such great kids in Sandy and part of our Youth City Council!
