Mayor for a Day!

Post Date:08/01/2017

What would you do if you were mayor for a day? Forty-two of our impressive youth, from Kindergarten to 12th grade, answered that weighty question in an essay contest where the winners earn $150 and the opportunity to accompany Mayor Dolan on his daily duties.

“Without a doubt, we are in good hands with such thoughtful ‘future mayors’ who care so much about Sandy and have ideas to make it even better,” said Tom Dolan. “These kids are and will continue to be a positive force in our community”.

Mayor Dolan enjoyed reading the essays so much, he gave every participant $25 and invited them to join him as his special guests in the July 4th parade which he deemed “the best part of the day”.

What do our Future Mayors love about Sandy?

Parks, trails and mountains, residents, and events!

What do our Future Mayors want to improve?

Homelessness & littering.

In their words:

To make this city even better, I would add a bunny park. That would be so cute. —Tinsley Smith

I would make sure the police and firefighters know how much we appreciate them. —Ellie Poelman

I love Sandy because Riley lives here and he is my best friend. —Giselle Sullivan

Although Sandy is an economic leader, we also cherish our parks, trails and canyons and need to preserve those. —Abigail Slama-Catron

Sometimes I worry about things that most kids don’t worry about. I am thankful I live in a place where I feel safe. —Nick Sullivan

I would run a public relations campaign which would target the hard-working employees of Sandy City [so] they feel valued and important. —Nicholas Tucker

I would have lots of service projects to strengthen the community and spread kindness. —Maelie McCoy

Congratulations to the winners who will be honored at an upcoming City Council meeting:

Elyse Walker, JJ Sullivan, Abigail Simmons
