Making Sandy Safer One Trail at a Time

Post Date:09/15/2017 3:19 PM

Sandy City is known for its outdoor recreation, but with the fun are hidden dangers. This summer season alone, our Fire Department initiated 23 rescues, most from the Bell Canyon Trails area. Knowing a greater focus on prevention was needed, Mayor Tom Dolan prioritized a public safety campaign to reduce injuries, and potentially save lives.

The trail safety campaign was officially launched on Friday, September 1 in anticipation of the Labor Day weekend and its increase in outdoor recreation.

“It’s well worth it to devote time and resources to protecting those who choose to recreate on our nearly 11 miles of scenic trails located in the Bell Canyon area,” said Dolan.

This campaign accomplishes four goals:

1. Provides descriptive information on six Bell Canyon hikes;

2. Outlines safety and use tips for hikers;

3. Shares watershed protection information;

4. Creates a trail marking system helping us more quickly locate injured parties, knowing that minutes can mean life or death.

Happy and, most importantly, SAFE hiking!
